The President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, chaired the annual awards ceremony of the Catalan Association of Sommeliers, where the winery Finca Sabaté i Coca · Castellroig received the Best Winery 2016 award.

The Catalan Association of Sommeliers (ACS) at its annual gala held at Mas Marroch, banquet facilities of restaurant El Celler de Can Roca in Vilablareix (Girona), has delivered its annual awards for the best sommelier, best wine cellar, best winemaker, best communicator and member of honour.
The awards were given as part of the Dinner Night of Sommeliers in 2016 led this time by the Roca brothers and attended by the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Honourable Mr. Carles Puigdemont i Casamajó.
Members of the ACS voted in favour of Castellroig · finca Sabaté i Coca as Best Winery in 2016, acknowledging the family career and its commitment to quality. One of the flagships of what is known as “Vins de Terrer”.
Marcel Sabaté, winemaker and the fourth generation of the family, said that “it is a great honour that one of the key figures of the value chain of the sector such as sommeliers, for its pedagogical and prescription, have chosen us for this award."
Castellroig Finca Sabaté i Coca is a family producing quality wine and cava since 1989. This family of vinegrowers and winemakers, originally from Valley of Bitlles, is now the fourth generation working to honestly project the personality of wines from this special Penedès corner.

Pioneers in the development of comprehensive Terroir Wines

Marcel Sabaté, winemaker and alma-mater of the company, was a pioneer in Vins de Terrer, philosophy that applies to every one of their wines and cavas Castellroig · finca Sabaté i Coca since the late 80s .
The basic idea is appreciating the different terroirs of the Sabaté i Coca family estate and to discover their peculiarities. The wines and cavas are made only from grapes harvested by hand from their own property of 41 hectares where 18 distinctive terroirs split into 66 parcels throughout the Vall del Bitlles.
Valley del Bitlles offers a privileged location: protected by mountains from the sea with the mild climate of the Mediterranean coast and permeable soil, with marine footprints, for high-value wine. Both for its geology as for its local climate, this valley concentrates very particular characteristics that provide grapes unique conditions for optimal ripening.
Marcel Sabaté carries out the tasks in the vineyard and cellar plot by plot, being environment-friendly and in favour of both biodiversity and organic balance, and micro-vinification of each plot separately, depending on the soil.
The target is the maximum expression of the land through wine and cavas in very limited productions. Althouhg complex and costly, but enhancing the properties of the native Penedès varietals such as Xarel·lo, where Castellroig was one of the first wineries in such varietal wines.
The contest "Best Sommelier of Catalonia" is an event organized by the Catalan Association of Sommeliers which aims to develop and promote knowledge of the sommelier profession, knowledge of wines and delicacies from around the world and especially in Catalonia as well as strengthen the friendship ties and cooperation between wine professionals.
